Criminal Background Checks Your Help Needed In BSA’s Youth Protection Efforts
On June 2 a letter was sent out by the Chief Scout Executive, Robert Mazzuca, stating that since 2003, the BSA has required a criminal background check for all new volunteers. This policy was implemented to verify that prospective volunteers can meet the BSA’s standards of leadership. It has been a valuable addition to the overall Youth Protection program.
He is asking for your help with this effort. Registration records indicate that because of many volunteers’ tenure as a registered volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America began before 2003, a criminal background check has not been conducted. He is asking these volunteers to demonstrate their commitment to our youth protection efforts by giving the details needed to have this background check completed.
The BSA has established an electronic method for these volunteers to provide the information. When you receive your letter, it will provide the web address on the internet along with a Member ID and password to allow you to log onto the site.
The Chief Scout Executive is requesting that you complete the process by August 1, 2008. If you do not have access to a computer the Scout Office will be glad to assist you in completing the process. The background check may require some additional personal data. Please be assured that the BSA has safeguards in place to maintain the integrity of the information you will be providing. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the Scout Office at 901-327-4193
